Winter time can be tricky as it is cold on the highveld and wet in the Cape (and cold!) KZN you have no excuse as it is summer all year round there!
Traditionally I back off the training by about 60% in winter but maintain a decent base and strength. Gym work for strength (important for all woman and over 40 athletes) Swimming in winter is a great time for stroke correction work and for building a big aerobic base. Running I try and maintain at a fairly high level as it is very hard to re-build run fitness. Biking takes a back seat in winter although I do try and get in a few indoor training sessions.
Last year and this year I have taken part in the Winter Trail Series of runs here in Cape Town and it has been a lot of fun. Managed 2 second places this year and waiting for the final this weekend. Winners are decided over 4 races with 3 to count.
Spring is only 3 weeks away and the 1st tri for the season in this part of the world is 3 October! 7 weeks to train!
I have today mapped out my season with the goals that were in my head now committed to paper.
Have to start waking up early again!
